Allerton House

Zeit, die Aufmerksamkeit mal auf ein unbekannteres Gebäude auf der Ostseite von Manhattan zu richten. Wir begeben uns an die 39th Street, um genau zu sein, an die Adresse 143 East 39th Street (zwischen Lexington Avenue im Westen und 3rd Avenue im Osten), und schauen hier mal auf ein Gebäude namens Allerton House, das hier gegen Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs errichtet wurde.

Ich bin schon vor einigen Wochen bei irgendeiner anderen Suche in der Sammlung des Museums der Stadt New York auf diese Bilderserie aus dem Jahr 1919 gestoßen, die innerhalb und außerhalb des Allerton House entstanden ist. Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, vorher schon mal was von diesem Haus gehört zu haben, also schauen wir mal genauer hin.


Hier stehen wir noch vor dem Haus und blicken direkt auf den Eingang:

Wir betreten das Gebäude jetzt durch den Eingang und schauen uns dort mal im Inneren um:

...bevor wir uns in die Lounge begeben. Keine Ahnung, was man vor 93 Jahren in einer Lounge getan hat. Vielleicht auch Chillen, so wie heute.

Ein bisschen frische Luft kann ja auch nie schaden. Vertreten wir uns die Beine doch etwas im Rooftop Garden, oben auf dem Dach.

Mit Blick auf das Entstehungsjahr des Gebäudes und auch der Fotos (1919) wage ich mal die kühne Annahme, dass es sich hier um Werbefotos handelt, die aus Promotionzwecken aufgenommen wurden.


Bei den Songlines wird es als "Allerton Hotel" wie folgt beschrieben:




Es hat den Anschein, als ob das Gebäude noch stehen könnte, schauen wir mal hinüber in die Gegenwart. Wir begeben uns in den mittleren Osten von Manhattan:



Westlich von uns befinden sich der Herald Square und Korea Town, etwas weiter nördlich Times Square und Bryant Park, und im Osten stößt man auf Tudor City, den klassischen Hochhauspark, den wir hier schon ein paar Mal aufgesucht haben, sowie etwas weiter nördlich das Gelände der Vereinten Nationen (UNO).





Das von uns gesuchte Gebäude ist H-förmig und steht an der Nordseite der 39th Street.




Na gut, das Gebäude hat hier die Hausnummer 141 East 39th Street und soll schon 1915 entstanden sein, aber ich bin der festen Überzeugung, dass wir bei diesem Haus richtig gelandet sind.




Zur Erinnerung nochmal der historische Blick vom Westen her, der auch gut die für die Identifikation des Gebäudes entscheidende H-Form wiedergibt:



Und es fällt wirklich nicht schwer, das Gebäude auch in der Gegenwart wiederzufinden. Ich habe hier den Google Street View Mann mal westlcih jenseits der Kreuzung Lexington Avenue / 39th Street abgesetzt, ähnlich der Position des Fotografen auf dem Bild oben:




Noch besser ist der Blick natürlich, wenn man sich etwas weiter östlich direkt auf die Lexington Avenue stellt.




Bei weiterer Annäherung stellt es sich dann doch noch als ziemlich hoch heraus:




Und der Blick direkt auf den Hauseingang:





Aus östlicher Richtung von der 3rd Avenue her kann man gut erkennen, dass da oben auf dem Dach immer noch irgendwas vor sich hingrünt.




Dieses Gebäude präzise einzukreisen, fällt gar nicht so leicht, die Hausnummern variieren von 141 - 145 East 39th Street. Hier bin ich aber fündig geworden, was präzisere Informationen zur Geschichte des Gebäudes angeht und lasse an dieser Stelle auch den Beitrag über das Allerton House enden:
